A NOTE FROM THE EDITOR...
Some of my favorite times growing up were spent on the softball field. I loved the competition of the game, I loved the camaraderie between my teammates, and I loved working hard at something where I could see the rewards of the effort. The game was special for another reason too: I spent the majority of those hours on the field with my dad, who always volunteered to help coach my teams. I could always count on him to spend extra time with me at the field on the off-season, when he would teach me a fast ball and other techniques, giving us something to share whenever the game started.
Those memories made this month extra special when we put a spin on our annual men’s edition by focusing on both men and women in sports. It gave me the opportunity to spend some one-on-one time with my father when we drove down to Pittsburgh to visit the Clemente Museum (p. 50), where I enjoyed watching him throw out the names of the players from the 1960s Pirates rosters and share other memories. Like the story of Roberto Clemente, the best sports stories often involve someone believing in themself enough to succeed, and there were no shortage of those this month. Madeline Williams (p. 14) combines education and athletics as she pursues sports journalism at Slippery Rock University with dreams of being on ESPN, and there’s little doubt she’ll get there. Mark Courtney (p. 28) has combined his business, Runner’s High, which provides race management services, with his own love of the sport.
Another story I loved working on this month was Mary Reimold’s (p.40). Mary believed in her four children on the field and off, and they’re all successful individuals inside and out. She showed me how a mother’s love only deepens as she gives of her own time and energy for her children. The stories this month, especially the five fabulous women in our center photos (p. 33) reminded me anything is possible if you try hard enough.
I leave you with words from track star Jackie Joyner-Kersee: “If a young female sees my dreams and goals come true, they will realize their dreams and goals might also come true.” Be inspired by those we feature this month, and believe your dreams can come true, too.
